Man debates removing ex-girlfriend from his ‘family’ phone plan after she ignores his deadline to get her own, despite being unable to set up her own contract due to losing all her cards and IDs during a recent vacation: 'I'd given her 2 weeks notice'

Breakups can be messy, and every post-breakup milestone often hurts more than the next…Changing their name on your phone from Tommy <3 <3 <3 to Tom. Deleting all your Instagram selfies together. And that last (17th) 'But I need closure' conversation…All the soppy, emotional stuff that everyone dreads comes first, but then (and some could argue even worse) the logistical details come after…Getting kicked off their family Netflix accounts, giving them back half of their closet, and, in this unique case, having to remove them from your family phone plan… 

This ex-boyfriend feels guilty for choosing to remove his ex-girlfriend from his phone plan, which he has been paying for over the last year or so. But to his logic, they are no longer dating (a decision that was solely up to her), so why should he be paying for her phone plan? Fair enough argument, we'd say! Well, about a week after the breakup, he informs her that he will be cancelling her portion of the plan, and with two weeks' notice, tells her to organize her own contract. But after being ignored, he begins feeling guilty, knowing that due to losing her wallet and all of her identification inside of it, she would be unable to start one before his cut-off date…

So, should he give her a grace period to get her life together and start her own contract when it best suits her, or finally set the boundaries that this breakup has been so fiercely lacking?

  • To be honest, she lost her wallet months ago…So it's not really his issue that she hasn't made a plan to sort out her missing cards. Why should we hold him responsible for her irresponsibility? Some could argue that the first problem began the moment he started to pay for her cellphone plan in the early days of their relationship. Will this couple finally reach a place where she is able to make calls, and he is able to decline them?

    So my ex-girlfriend has been with me on a family phone plan that I've been paying for for at least a year now.

    I spoke to the service provider and the only way to remove her from the plan is if she goes and makes a new phone plan for herself or if I flat out cancel her phone line and she looses her phone number.

    Here's the thing. On a trip a few months ago she lost her wallet and every single form of ID she owns so for her to get a new phone plan she would have to jump through a lot of hoops just to get another piece of ID and credit cards and everything required to open the plan.

    OP IceCucumbers She does not have a job so there is no money to offer. I'm not sure actually why I let it go on so long. I have low self esteem and the patience of a saint I suppose

    NTA. RedJerzey If i lost my wallet, i would have a new ID and cards within days. For it to be months is no excuse. Thats laziness or she doesn't care. Either way, not your problem. I would let text her... the phone will be disconnected on [date]. If she needs more time, she needs to venmo you the cost of another month. Feel free to ask for the last year of payments you have made too.

    scooby946 It doesn't matter if she lost her wallet. She will still need to cancel and have reissued everything in the wallet. She is your EX girlfriend. You gave her a time frame, and stick to it. NTA P.S. see a therapist for your self- esteem issues.
